Water Quality’s Impact on Oral Health



Water has primary role in our lives. We need water for drinking, bathing, maintaining oral hygiene, cooking and many other tasks. But one thing worth remembering here is that characterizes of water in every area change. Hence, the water supplies in different areas have their own sets of benefits and disadvantages when it comes to health.

Having that said, the quality of water in some areas may not be up to the mark. These are the under-developed countries where quality of water needs to be worked upon.

Effects of water quality on oral health
Water quality certainly has its impact on oral health. According a research in Indonesia, the children in areas where there wasn’t clean water supplied to the people were found to be more vulnerable again the risk of tooth decay. Upon testing, it was found out that the water supplied in those areas didn’t have fluoride. It contains manganese at higher levels. And the acidity in water was generally higher. All these factors can ruin oral health.


Tong term disadvantages of poor quality of water
Lack of clean water can lead to the consumption of water which wouldn’t be clean. Such water consumption can prompt a person to have poor oral health which starts deteriorating due to consistent consumption of unclean water. As a result, the people face great oral health risks during their adulthoods. The oral health conditions which come as a result of poor quality water consumption are numerous. These conditions may include gum disease, tooth decay, and even oral cancer. Even United States has some areas where water supplied to the communities is not fully drinkable. These are the minority groups or the communities which are not very stable economically. And since the economic situation of people living in those communities is not very good, they often find themselves unable to bear the costs of dental treatments.

So, what’s needed here?
Among the good foods that we need to eat, there is certainly the need to consume good quality water. Fluoridated water is the optimum choice when it comes to oral health. Furthermore, you need to make sure that the drinking water in your access doesn’t contain toxins and acidic compositions.

Apart from everything you do at home, it is necessary to visit your dentist on regular basis. During a dental visit, your dentist will be able to identify any existing and possible oral health conditions which you don’t want in your oral cavity.
